Carter

We were back on home soil in Boston. Back in our apartment building and walking up to her front door. I carried both our bags, one in either hand, and stared at the back of her perfect head, my teeth pressed together.

Last night, she’d been totally out of it. She’d refused to answer my questions about the meeting, she’d sat on the bed, red in the face on and off for half an hour, then spent another hour in the bathroom alone. Once again, we’d had room service. Once again, we’d had sex, but last night, she’d been angry, tearing at my flesh, biting, practically spitting.

Fuck, it had been fantastic, but something was off, and if it had anything to do with Leone, I had to know.

Alissa drew her apartment keys out of her bag and opened up her door. She stepped inside, and I entered behind her, dropped the bags next to her sofa.

She kicked off her shoes immediately then let out a heavy sigh.

“Alissa,” I said.

“What?” She stretched her neck and scratched. “Actually, no, I don’t want to talk about it, Carter. Thanks for doing this for the company. I’m sure we’ll keep your number in case of emergencies like this in future.”

“Alissa.”

She spun on the spot, her hair swaying loose down her back, and glared at me. “What, Carter? What do you have to say to me?”

“You’re acting like a loon,” I replied evenly. “That’s what I have to say to you. We spent last night fondling each other, eating together, talking, and I can tell something ain’t right. So what is it, huh?”

“Oh my god,” she hissed, and pinched her cheeks. “Oh my god. Dude, why are you doing this to me? It’s got nothing to do with you. I can handle my own shit, all right?”

“It’s got nothing to do with that.”

“Whatever. I knew last night and the night before that was a mistake. I knew it. We both agreed this wouldn’t mean anything, and that we’d, I don’t know, go our separate ways at the end of a week, but you’re still here, and—” Alissa pressed her lips together and they whitened around the edges.

“And what?” I asked.

“Nothing.”

“You don’t want me to leave anymore,” I said, reading it on her face. “And that scares you. You’re afraid of me staying and you’re afraid of me going, so you don’t know what you want. But that’s not what I’m here to talk to you about. I’m not here as a fuck buddy or a colleague. I’m here as a concerned friend.”

“We are not friends.”

“You’re breaking my heart,” I said dryly. “Cut the crap and tell me what happened at that meeting. Something has you spooked.”

“It’s company business.”

“I’m part of the company,” I replied, not buying this for a second. Whatever had happened yesterday reeked of my stepfather’s involvement. And if that was the case, I had to know about it. I had to handle it.

“Not anymore, you’re not. Your contract ended this morning, the minute we set foot on solid ground in Boston.
