Chapter 41

Present day—March

Brianna laughed nervously as Greg unlocked the back door of the house. “Are you sure we should be here when your parents aren’t home?”

“I’m sure. My folks let me drop by whenever I want. That’s why they gave me the key.” He pushed open the door and immediately entered a code into the security system. It beeped its acceptance.

“But you don’t live with them.”

It was Greg’s turn to laugh. “No. I share a house near the university with a bunch of other guys. BSU students, like me. The last thing I want to do is live with my parents at my age.”

His comment made her feel like a child. She was only a year younger than Greg, and she still lived at home. She still depended upon her parents for pretty much everything, including transportation. She might as well be twelve.

“Want something to drink?” Greg asked.

“Sure.”

She moved through the kitchen into the dining room where the window overlooked a large deck and, beyond it, a fenced yard that must be stunning in the spring and summer when the grass turned green, the flowers were in bloom, and the waterscape gurgled. She turned and looked into the formal living area. Nothing out of place. Everything looked elegant and, for that matter, never used. Like a showroom in an upscale furniture store.

“Here you go.” Greg stepped to her side and held out a glass with ice and, she assumed from the fizzing, cola.

“Thanks.” She took it from him, their hands touching.

That was the moment when she noticed the stillness that surrounded them. The silence made her feel oddly vulnerable. It wasn’t as if she’d never been alone with a guy before. But this seemed . . . different.

She moved around the room, pretending to look at a couple of prints hanging on the wall. “What do your parents do?” she asked, more to create some sound than from true curiosity.

“Mom’s in real estate. Dad’s a financial planner.”

She turned to look at him. “Where do they go to church?”

His eyebrows raised. “Mom and Dad?” He laughed again. “I doubt they’ve ever darkened a church door except for maybe to attend a funeral.”

“Then how did you come to know Christ?”

He shrugged. “A friend.” He motioned with his head. “Come on. Let me show you the family room. They’ve got a massive TV with surround sound. We can watch a movie. Or Dad’s got a PlayStation 5. You could take me on in Spider-Man.” He grinned. “But I warn you, I’ve never been beat.”

“I’m afraid I wouldn’t know what I’m doing. Haven’t ever played it.” She hadn’t ever played much of anything when it came to video games.

“A movie it is.” He reached for her hand. Brianna stepped forward to let him take it, nerves tumbling in her stomach once again.

The family room in the basement was enormous, and the large-screen TV was unlike anything she’d seen before. Three rows of leather recliners had been placed in front of it on a sloping floor.
