Case 2

W. is a 33-year old man (born 1954) with an academic education. He comes from a nuclear family, the eldest of seven children.

His earliest erotic memories go back to primary school: the pleasure of sleeping spoonlike with his younger brother, petting with his two younger sisters and the excitement of changing of clothes with friends at the swimming pool.

An important memory dates from his twelfth year: a friend and his twin brother were staying at his home and slept in the living room. When he came downstairs, early in the morning, he nestled down between them. His father, catching him there, took him out angrily.

From his time in secondary school he remembers an equally strong attraction towards boys and girls, though he had noticed (see above) that sex with boys was forbidden. Close dancing was nice and so was looking at the beautiful boys whom school girls had brought to the dance. He engaged in taking girls home, french kissing and touching tits. When he was seventeen he had a girl friend who excited him, but she broke off their relationship. From this early period he remembers a wet dream-something about flying and landing. It had been the first and the last time he had such a dream. From the age of twelve on, he used to jerk off, always on the toilet. He did not fantasize when masturbating. During this time he remembers that he was aroused by a picture of a soldier in a shirt, legs naked, but also by passages of books picturing straight sex.

Once away from home (1973) the “real work” was to begin, he thought, with girls. He made love with several women and had some relationships, the longest lasting for more than a year. In December ’76 he made love for the first time with a young man, not too intensely, but enough to make him write in his diary: “I am probably bisexual.” This incidental contact lasted until March ’77. In January ’77 he wrote in his diary: “An avowed homophile I am certainly not, fucking with boys doesn’t attract me at all.”

In June ’77 an attractive bisexual young man invited him into his bed and he entered into it. They made love. In his diary he then began to raise doubts about his ‘bi’-construction. This experience, however, was opposed by another, when he, shortly after that, fucked with a woman for the first time and then another during the same month.

April ’78 he attended Pink Saturday in Roermond, where, as he states himself, his fascination with “bold gayness” begins. Stimulated by the ambiance he was attracted by a beautiful boy who enticed him. They hugged and made love in the big tent. His old images of gay people vanished. In December ’79, after having joined a workshop of gay colleagues, he wrote in his diary that he finally had the urge to cut the knot. While attending a gay and lesbian party in March 1980, he met a guy he fell in love with, whom it was good making love to and who would show him the way in the gay world.
