Some therapists have great difficulty understanding the idea of process and tend to allow or even encourage couples to communicate on the level of content. Therapists may have difficulty with the notion of process for a variety of reasons. They may have been reared in a family that taught them to avoid process and focus on content. Certain process elements may trigger countertransference reactions, such as fear of increasing the couple’s emotional intensity if process elements are pointed out. A supervisor may be able to assist the therapist in identifying his or her problems and may recommend personal or group therapy to help the therapist gain more self-awareness and change his or her behaviors.
