But We Shot it First!

On a summer ride-along, I (Chaplain Boyd) was riding with one of our favorite Alaska State Troopers. Debra was riding with another trooper. The AST I was with was dispatched to Jim Creek, a favorite summer camping area, because someone was shooting at a car. There are many old and trashed cars parked in Jim Creek, and people liked to go there to use them for target practice.

Upon arrival, we saw two individuals shooting at a late model vehicle. The trooper asked them what were they doing, and they responded that they were the first ones to shoot the car. The trooper said, “Do you see that tent over there? The people in that tent own that vehicle.” The two responded, “Yes, but we were the first ones to shoot it!” The trooper replied, “You don’t understand: They drove this car out here to go camping and they don’t want anyone to shoot at it!” Their last response was, “But we were the first ones to shoot it!”

Takeaway: Common sense is not always common.
