Feeling like an outsider or not belonging
Most autistics will have a really hard time fitting in anywhere. They may feel like they donât belong anywhere, or like they are on the wrong planet. They may even feel like they donât belong with their family because they are so different to them. This can then mean they donât relate to the feeling of âhomeâ either.
This is one reason why knowing that youâre autistic is so important. Belonging plays a large part in a personâs sense of well-being. Knowing that youâre autistic not only explains a huge number of things, it also makes sense of why you might feel like an outsider and tells you where you might find people who you can relate to.
It also means that statements like âI donât belong hereâ or âIâve never fitted inâ can just be our reality. Some autistics genuinely donât experience a sense of fitting in or belongingâever. Itâs not just something weâve managed to convince ourselves of when weâre feeling low. So while these statements can be warning signs of mental distress, they can also simply be an expression of what we go through on a daily basis.
