Feeling like an outsider or not belonging

Most autistics will have a really hard time fitting in anywhere. They may feel like they don’t belong anywhere, or like they are on the wrong planet. They may even feel like they don’t belong with their family because they are so different to them. This can then mean they don’t relate to the feeling of “home” either.

This is one reason why knowing that you’re autistic is so important. Belonging plays a large part in a person’s sense of well-being. Knowing that you’re autistic not only explains a huge number of things, it also makes sense of why you might feel like an outsider and tells you where you might find people who you can relate to.

It also means that statements like “I don’t belong here” or “I’ve never fitted in” can just be our reality. Some autistics genuinely don’t experience a sense of fitting in or belonging—ever. It’s not just something we’ve managed to convince ourselves of when we’re feeling low. So while these statements can be warning signs of mental distress, they can also simply be an expression of what we go through on a daily basis.
