When you think he’s gonna kill you, you don’t even think about turning him in. I just wanted outta there. I was petrified. And you know, his truck was rigged, I should have turned him in because he probably did this all the time. But see, I just wanted outta there. You couldn’t get the door open, I mean he, I could not get the door, that’s how he—I couldn’t get out, I was trapped, so that’s why I was so scared, there was no escape. A big, big—with the cab—and he pulled my long hair, I had long hair and he just pulled it, into the back I was fighting trying to kick the window out. And he just, it was scary. I pushed the knife away, and each time he choked me, he choked me longer. You see, the last time he choked me I was on the verge of passing out. So I knew then, if I didn’t give in, I would be dead, ’cause each time it was longer. He meant business.

He just said after he was done—you know, it didn’t take that long. He wanted me to have oral sex, and it was all over like and then he just says, “Since you gave me such a hard time, you’re gonna stay here a while.” I stayed there a while. I just laid there. I think he was like rubbing my arm and stuff, and then he finally said, “You can go.” And then he said, “Bye baby.” I remember that.

After this horrific experience, Martha began a conventional life. She was happily married with two children, when a snitch reported that she and her husband were selling marijuana. Martha’s father was a police officer, and she lived in a prison community, where almost everyone worked in the local prison and where drug use was severely punished. Martha was let off with probation because of her father’s connections, but her husband went to jail and was on parole after his release. The surveillance of her probation officers was overbearing.
