Chapter Twelve

Gill

“Look who decided to join us!” I say. “Su, how good of you. Please, sit!”

Fuck. She’s had a change of heart and wants to make last night public. We put down the stones and sticks in our hands and look at one another. I can tell Clover is just as interested as I am. Truth be told, I am scared shitless right now.

“Have you had some new revelations, Nova?” asks Clover. “Perhaps some intuition you would like to throw out?”

“Actually, I have a few things to say.”

Is it me, or did Mel just tense up as I did?

“Guys, we have a lot of time on our hands. And we can’t keep acting like we’re kids.”

She pauses. I speak.

“What do you suggest?”

“I’m going to tell a story.”

The other two make low noises that could be interpreted as scoffs, or growls. I stay quiet, but relax a bit. I want to see what she’s thinking.

“What kind of story?” asks Mel.

“I’ll speak first, and maybe you’ll see where I’m going with this in a minute.”

“Okay,” agrees Clover. “Please, begin.”

Su clears her throat.

“Three years ago I was at a sales conference in San Diego. A former client of mine, who I know from way back when I was in the honey business, was there as well, and we got to talking. Now Claire introduced me to the idea of a game worth mentioning, and I wanted all of you to be present when I ask one very potent question.”

I draw a breath and hold it.

“Are you willing?”

“Willing to do what?” I ask.

“That was not a story,” says Clover, slightly disappointed.

“It will be,” she promises with a wide grin. “So, are you?”

“I cannot be willing to play a game about which I know nothing,” sniffs Clover. “Or is this the game?”

“It can be.”

Mel jumps in. “Where are you going with this, Miss Nova?”

“I want to see how much you’ll gamble knowing nothing.”

She picks up a handful of sand and raises it an inch off the ground. We watch as the grains pour back down until there are none left.

“I’m in.” I let my breath out.

“What? Are you serious? This ‘game’ could be anything, Gill.” Clover doesn’t sound happy.

“Exactly. Don’t you get it? She’s teasing us.” I look sideways at her. “I want in.”

I can see Clover gets it. His eyes grow bright with the challenge. He beams hard.

“It’s a go for me, Nova.”

All eyes are on Mel now. He’s thinking, his face calm but his eyes twitchy. He does this a lot. I nudge his foot with a fist.

“Okay. But I just want to see where this will go.”

We turn our necks to Su, whose face just lights up with a crane of her bare neck. I could have gone to her last night. I could have simply given in to her deep eyes, the ones staring back at me now with laughter.

“It’s a simple memory game. With one twist. I go on with my story, and if any one of you denies ever hearing it, or interrupts me, the rest of us take your ration for the night.
