Positioning a New Magazine in a New Field

If you are launching a magazine in a field that never existed before (or one that no one previously recognized), your task is to explain what the field is, who the readers might be, how many there are, and how you will reach them. You also must define who the logical advertisers are, how you will reach them, and how you will explain to them why they should advertise.

For this kind of magazine, competitive positioning is not needed, but it is good to compare the magazine with other magazines in somewhat different fields that have been successful. A good example of this is Stratos, as discussed in chapter 20, “The Business Plan.”
