Specific Groups That Struggle To Achieve Balance
Challenges Faced By Stay At Home Parents
Being a stay at home parent can feel like a juggling act -trying to balance the house, kids, your spouse, and your own needs all at once can be overwhelming. By dropping just one of the balls, your juggling feels like everything will come tumbling down. Stay at home parents are busy and yet they feel like they are not doing anything productive, since the line that separates needs and wants is often blurred.
Staying at home and taking care of your kids can be fulfilling, but it can also lead to a spark of mixed emotions over the decision to stop working and this lack of a healthy work-life balance causes stay at home parents to face many problems. These include:
● Isolation: Being at home 24/7 with your kids can get very lonely. You are isolated in your own little bubble with your children, who naturally cannot hold an adult conversation. If you were forced to leave your career to look after you kids, you might find yourself missing lunch meeting with clients or coffee breaks with your colleagues.
Studies have shown that social isolation further aggravates other issues such as insomnia, addictions and stress. Isolation can be negated by joining parenting groups in school, where you can do projects together with kids, or meeting other parents at the playground or library.
● Depression: Some stay at home parents experience mild to severe symptoms of depression. According to a study published on PsychologyToday.com, the risk of developing depression increases if you feel that you are better off working than being at home with your kids, but of course the situation does not allow you to work, you’re a stay at home parent.
Depression also occurs for stay at home parents that have high expectations. If you expect a smooth transition from breakfast, to a football game, to nap time, and then to laundry, you will be extremely disappointed. Life with children is typically unpredictable, and young tots are not always cooperative. Depression can also come from feelings of isolation, loneliness and loss of a sense of purpose and value that people often receive from the work environment.
● Anxiety: Staying at home with your children, especially if circumstances forced you to leave the workforce, can cause immense anxiety. Stress about finances, your children’s welfare, marriage and other issues can be the source of additional anxiety. Being in a fast-paced work environment can lend a sense of purpose and value to your life that can be missed if you are at home. Set goals for your children and your home life so that you can begin moving forwards and feel more of a sense of accomplishment in your life.
● Low self-esteem: While at work, you may have always known when you were doing a good job, as you were praised and acknowledged for it. The numbers and the feedback from your colleagues could easily reflect your progress. But being a stay at home parent doesn’t feel rewarding, even when you know you have done an exemplary job.
