Saying no is part and parcel of a product person’s job: It is impossible to please everyone. If, however, the person whose idea or request has been declined does not feel understood or even feels rejected, then it will be hard for the individual to accept no as an answer; the person might be disappointed or angry. I therefore recommend that you try to say no in a firm but caring way. Empathise with the individual and be grateful for the suggestion or request, even if you disagree with it. This will make it easier for the person to accept the message. In the previous example, you might reply to John, “Thank you for suggesting the feature, John. It sounds like it’s important to you. I am really sorry; I am struggling to see how we can accommodate it right now. But can you please tell me why you want to see it added?” This way you express your gratitude for John’s effort; you show that you understand that the request is important to him; you explain why you can’t say yes at present; and you encourage John to say more about his reason for requesting the feature, which tells John that you value his input and want to continue the conversation.
