How to play the game

Power/Interest Grid for Stakeholder Prioritisation

Easy. The powerful and interested stakeholders get face time – meaning those who are powerful and who can create an impact on your results. At the same time, they also have/hold an essential stake in your results. In other words, when you play this game to your best ability, you’ll invest anywhere from 70-80% of your time and effort, face time and build closer relationships (top right quadrant) with:

• Your team and the captain/boss decision-makers

• Sponsors and mentors

• Your opponent – if any

• Gatekeepers should know your name and your face, so should influencers

Be wise and place your amplifiers and the networkers and supporters in a relatively powerful position if it applies. They should know your name and your work. You want to keep supporters and referees informed and satisfied with less effort and more efficiency (bottom right quadrant). Be aware of some players who hold high power though low interest (top left quadrant) in your outcomes, keep them satisfied meeting deadlines, deliveries, etc. Make no mistake, they can be showstoppers if they want to.

And the energy leakers? Claim back your power, energy and time. Set healthy boundaries and honour your values. You may decide to allocate minimum effort (bottom left quadrant) or say ‘hasta la vista’.
