‘Okay,’ I said, turning over in bed and pulling the duvet up over me. It had been really cool in the RV in the night and for the first time I’d needed it. Jane, meanwhile, had sweated through two pairs of pyjamas.

‘I’ll be really disappointed if you don’t,’ she said.

‘Yes, yes, yes,’ I mumbled.

‘Mike. Just make sure you don’t forget.’ Her emphasis was on the word ‘forget’ as she bent down to give me a kiss. I swung my hands around her waist, my hands slowly rising upon the cycling top.

We’d not been able to find an RV park in Telluride so we’d stopped in a campground just off the top of Lizard Head Pass and over ten miles back up the road Jane had cycled along. At just below 10 000 feet, the altitude had caused us all to lose our appetite. Jane had already suffered a couple of nose bleeds and her altitude sickness symptoms were generally more acute. Of all of us, it seemed unfair that she should be the one suffering.

I stood at the kiosk desk at the entrance watching two humming birds feeding just above me. They hovered just by a bird feeder, their brown, yellow and green colours blending perfectly with the vegetation surrounding them. It was a magical sight. I stood transfixed momentarily, my mind emptied from the chores I was there to complete.

‘Graceful, aren’t they?’ the park attendant said, noticing I was entranced.

‘Totally beautiful. I’ll tell you what, to see them in the wild, it kind of makes this trip worthwhile.’

She smiled. ‘Do you get them in Australia?’

‘We’re British,’ I said.
