‘Which soap powder did you use?’ hissed Hilary, elbowing him in the ribs.

‘The green one, of course!’ he said.

‘You did not,’ said Hilary. ‘This is exactly what happens when you use the red soap and add water. It’ll be frothing for weeks.’

T. Bear shook his head in confusion. He was certain he had used the green powder.

The royals kept smiling, knowing better than to lose their smiles in front of cameras, but with each footstep came another rude SQUELCH. Camera flashes burst out as they approached the hotel, and so too did a foam of white frothy bubbles.

‘What a terrific little place this is,’ said the queen, accepting Anna’s hand in her gloved wing. She lifted her feet, drawing more foam out of the carpet.

‘Ma’am’ as in ‘jam’, not ‘marm’ as in ‘calm’, thought Anna, wanting to get everything right.

‘We’re very pleased to have you here, ma’am,’ she said, grimacing.

‘Very interesting red carpet!’ said the king with confusion. ‘This frothy stuff feels top-notch whizzer on my hot feet!’

Anna didn’t understand. Perhaps royals do speak a different language? she thought. She hurried everyone along to escape the growing mound of foam, but the royal retinue numbered at least nine penguins, not to mention the three young chicks tottering along at their feet: Boz, Tikk and Tilly. With each new pair of webbed feet the foam on the red carpet bubbled higher.
