CHAPTER TWELVE

The smile slowly slipped from her face, and for a long moment, they sat there, gazes locked. Violet’s brows drew together, and she caught her lower lip between her teeth. Dean recognized the nervous gesture now and wished he could read her mind.

“More coffee?” Elsa’s voice broke the connection, and Dean was kind of glad for the distraction. Something told him that Violet was aware of his interest now. Where she’d go with it, he could only hope.

“Sure. Thanks.” But as she started to fill his mug, his phone rang. “Oops. Maybe not.” One of his officers was calling to let him know someone was there at the office to see him. “Okay, Elsa, I’m gonna have to run.” He handed her a twenty dollar bill. “That’s for Violet’s too. Keep the change.”

Violet started to protest, but he just smiled at her. Elsa smiled too as she looked back and forth between them and said, “You’re a good man, Sheriff.”

“I try.” As she walked away, he stood from the booth. He put his hat on and gave Violet one last smile. “Talk to you later.”

“Thank you. Again.”

Dean left the cafe with a flurry of butterflies in his stomach. It had been so long since he’d felt anything like it. And there was a spark of hope that maybe...just maybe...Violet was interested in him too. He shut down the little voices that echoed their same concerns after their time at the shore. If it was meant to be, things would work out.

Violet watched Dean walk out the door of the cafe and then glanced toward the counter where her gaze met Elsa’s. Warmth gathered in her cheeks as the older woman gave her a big grin and a nod. She smiled quickly in return before turning her attention to the email she’d been working on when Dean had joined her. She’d been writing to ask her friend’s advice on how to handle what she was feeling for Dean. And now she really needed that advice since it seemed that perhaps Dean was more interested than she had first thought.

She finished the email and pressed send. And then, because she’d promised Elsa, she ate the rest of the food on her plate. It wasn’t an easy task, because the knot of excitement in her stomach had suppressed any appetite she might have had. Once done that, she packed up her laptop and went to say goodbye to Elsa.

“He’s a good man,” Elsa told her. “And I think he sees you’re a good woman.”

“I’m not sure-”

“Many women have tried to capture his attention, but this is the first time I’ve seen him seek out the attention of someone.” Elsa gestured her hand to the now almost empty cafe. “He will come in and they’ll invite him to sit with them, but he always sits alone or with his officers. Not today. You must be special.”

“I don’t know if I’m special,” Violet argued. “We do have some things in common, but we’ve not even known each other a week.
