•After relating the death of prominent individuals, al-Ṣūlī may add verses composed on them as part of their obituary. We have seen an example of this in Chapter Three, with the death of al-ʿAbbās b. al-Ḥasan.

•One or more pieces may be included as a commentary within accounts of specific events. Al-Ṣūlī’s own poetry is mainly directed at people in authority and praises their successes while hinting at their generosity; it may be followed by an account of the addressee’s reaction. One such case has been seen in Chapter Two, where al-Ṣūlī congratulates al-Rāḍī on the death of the Daylamite leader Mardāwīj and asks him for a gift.

•Al-Ṣūlī also mentions other people’s poetic takes on some events, such as, in Chapter Three, al-Munajjim’s lines on the murder of al-ʿAbbās b. al-Ḥasan; verses by authors other than al-Ṣūlī may on occasion be less flattering or downright critical.47

•Finally, poetry may be a part of a discussion or debate. In Chapter Three we have seen a complex exchange across generations between Abbasid caliphs and the Munajjim family; there are many simpler conversations fully or partly carried out through the quotation or composition of poetry. Some examples will be seen in Chapter Five.
