KERRY, JOHN (11 DECEMBER 1943–)

The Democratic Party candidate for president in 2004 and the secretary of state in the Barack Obama administration starting in 2013. Kerry was a Democratic U.S. senator from Massachusetts from 1985 until 2013. He was born in Aurora, Colorado, and graduated from Yale University with a degree in political science in 1966. Shortly after graduating from college, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. During his time in the Navy, Kerry completed two tours in Vietnam. Upon his return, he spoke out against the war, but most specifically against politicians who used politics to cover their culpability while putting the real burden of war on U.S. soldiers. Kerry later attended the Boston College of Law and earned a J.D. in 1976. He became a public prosecutor in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, shortly thereafter.
