Chapter Four

“Oh, so he still hasn’t showed up, then?” The receptionist led another two girls to the board room and told them to sit on the couch, which was now getting a bit over crowded.

“I’ll go and see what I can find out.”

I looked across at the newcomer to see her, head down, reading something riveting on her phone.

“I don’t believe this,” she said, shaking her head. “Here, have a look. She passed her phone to the girl beside her, who reacted in exactly the same way. She’d been sat there tutting and shaking her head for around two minutes by the time we heard footsteps running up the stairs. She passed the phone to me. I took a quick glance, but didn’t have time for the headline to register before the doors opened and Jake burst in.

“Oh, sorry I’m a tiny bit late, ladies,” he glanced at his watch, “oh, quite a lot late, actually. Oh well, better late than never, eh?”

The two girls to my right looked in his direction, without looking at him. The second he smiled at one of them, she quickly averted her eyes to the floor.

“Two minutes.” He disappeared into the board room.

Waiting for the door to shut, the girl on the end leaned across and showed me what it was that had made her so interested. This time it registered.

“Errr . . . Melody, would you like to come in, please?”

I got to my feet, grinned at the others, opened my mouth and shook my head in disbelief.

“Take a seat,” he said, gesturing at the chair opposite. “Ok, you start on Monday.”

I waited patiently.

“I said, you start on Monday. You’re free to go.”

“But, what about the interview?”

“A formality, I told you. I gave you the job on Friday, remember?”

“Yes, but—"

“Here, here’s my office.”

I studied the card. “I have no idea where this is.”

“Oh, no matter about that. I’ll send a driver round.” He passed a piece of scrap paper across the desk.

“Write your address on that.”

I did as he asked and pushed it forward.

“Now turn it over.”

Again I did as he asked.

“Now write your phone number.”

I scribbled down my number.

“Now you can pass it across.”
