Ciaran leaned against Kendal’s door frame. He twirled his car keys around his forefinger. “Thanks for inviting me today,” he said, hoping the simple words conveyed his sincere gratitude. Even with the minor vetting by her family, this was the best Thanksgiving he could recall since his father’s death. At no point, had he felt unwelcome.

“You’re welcome. I could tell that everyone liked you.”

“Oh? How?”

“My mom suggested that I invite you back again.”

“I’d love to. Anytime.”

“Would you like to come in?”

He shook his head. “I’m exhausted. Turkey, basketball, and then pie. I’m about to crash. If I sit down, I’ll be snoring in minutes.”

Kendal laughed, unleashing her irresistible dimples. Before he could think better of it, his hand flew up and he touched one. He gently traced the indention with his pointer finger. “Seeing you smile is like watching the sun burst through a cluster of clouds. It fills me with such joy.” Her eyes widened briefly with surprise before going soft and warm. They swayed toward each other as if drawn together by an unseen magnetic force. He was close enough to feel her breath feather over his lips when she gasped and withdrew. She flung a hand up between them.

“Um…. Well…I shouldn’t keep you.” She flashed him a stiff smile. “I know you’re tired. Thanks for driving for me.”

“Kendal….” He didn’t know what to say. They’d been about to kiss. She’d been as much into the moment as he was. But if he pushed her on it, she’d shut him down.

She shook her head. “Ciaran…I don’t want a relationship. I’m…it’s….”

“You don’t have to explain it to me.”

“I feel like I should.”

“No. You already did. I can’t say that I’m not disappointed.” He leaned down and kissed her forehead. “Thank you for today. I’ll talk to you soon.” He hung around long enough to make sure she locked up before he got in his car.

A smile curled his lips as he navigated the streets of Greenville. Then a laugh escaped. Damn, he thought. He was pathetic. He was happy—deliriously so—because Kendal Washington had almost kissed him. Because she’d wanted to kiss him. It didn’t matter that it didn’t actually happen. Well, he was dying for that kiss. But it’d been so close, he knew it was only a matter of time.

Her family certainly seemed to believe that there was something between them. They’d been polite and welcoming during dinner. But when he’d been playing basketball with the men, Kendal’s father had begun asking him questions that let Ciaran know the man viewed him as a possible suitor. Also, Kendal’s brother Kenneth had very casually mentioned that he’d break Ciaran’s kneecaps if he ever hurt Kendal. At first, Ciaran was sure he’d misheard Kenneth. The guy was so quiet and calm as to be almost comatose. But the look in Kenneth’s eyes had made it clear. Kenneth was issuing Ciaran a warning as if he were Kendal’s boyfriend. He’d never been so thrilled to be threatened in his entire life.

So, yeah, he was optimistic.
