Like everyone, physicians are often dogged about the knowledge they have acquired, and it can be exceedingly uncomfortable to confront the suggestion that they were educated incorrectly. Challenging doctors to treat pain more aggressively, or to refrain from prescribing antibiotics for sore throat, or to utilize adrenaline when anesthetizing a finger, is an affront to their foundational theories of medicine and a rebuke to years of their own practice. With this much at stake, in some cases they not only believe something to be true, they want it to be true. And when people want something to be true, facts often become subjugated regardless of the weight of the evidence.

Which brings us to the next pseudoaxiom, perhaps the most publicly circulated and widely accepted pseudoaxiom of the past twenty-five years—the one that everyone wants to be true.
