Doing the Wave

Fishing is an activity enjoyed by about one out of six Americans, at locations ranging from remote mountain streams to ocean beaches, vast lakes to tiny ponds, the open sea to lazy winding rivers, and almost anyplace else with enough water to justify dropping in a lure or baited hook. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Americans take about 437 million fishing trips a year, providing more than ample opportunity to confirm Eugene Field’s observation, “I never lost a little fish. . . . It always was the biggest fish I caught that got away.” Occasionally, however, even the one that didn’t get away can provide a fun and unusual tale.

Willow Beach is located in the Arizona portion of Lake Mead National Recreation Area, and fishing is one of the primary attractions of that area. When I worked there in the 1970s the management of a resort operating under a permit from the government had astutely parlayed angling into a good combination of positive customer relations and effective advertising.

Their program was based on a simple invitation: If you caught a fish in the area that tipped the scales at five pounds or more and brought it to the resort, they would take a photo of you and the fish and hang the picture on the wall. Almost all of the lunkers in those days were rainbow trout, and the walls of the restaurant, store, and other public areas in the building were pretty well covered with those photos. In addition to minimizing interior decorating decisions for the resort staff, it also provided a popular and informal form of competition among the anglers.
