“Of all the asinine, stupid, idiotic…” Cara Moore took a breath, trying to calm the storm raging within her. “What kind of rock-eating asshole goes toward where all the monsters are?”

The others in her party shuffled their feet and darted their eyes around them. At the trees encompassing them, just south of the North Road. At each other. At the ground. Toward the sky. Anywhere but at her.

“Well?” she yelled.

“Don’t blame me,” Firesnake said. “I didn’t decide where they’re going. I just track them.”

Cara gritted her teeth and growled at the man. She took another breath. “Okay. So, they went toward Kruzekstan, maybe toward Artuyeska. Either way, they’re going to where all the monsters live.”

“Monsters?” Blackshade asked. The infuriating woman was picking at her nails with one of her daggers.

“Are you telling me you two don’t know about those black creatures that have been killing whole towns in this part of Dizhelim?”

Blackshade shrugged. “I’ve been on jobs in the west lately. Lots of people in Arania, Sutania, and the Great Enclave are wanting people dead right now. What’s with the monsters?”

“I think I’ve heard some rumors about what you’re talking about,” Firesnake said. “But there are always some kind of rumors about a new thing supposedly killing everyone or that is a sign of the end of the world. Remember the owl-jackal down near Sittingham Desert? That was an interesting one.”

Cara stared at the Falxen in disbelief. “You can take it from me. These aren’t just rumors or children’s tales.”

“Have you actually seen one up close?” he asked her.

“Nooo.” Her voice pitched in the most condescending way she could muster. “Do you know how it’s easy to tell?”

“I’ll bite. How?”

“Because I’m not dead, you moron! These things can’t be killed except with a special type of magic. I have contacts that have met and even worked a little with some of them. We do not want to go near their stronghold. That place is over there.” She waved her hand toward the southeast. “Where our targets are heading.”

“Are they friends of the monsters?” Jerrid Alsey asked. The man had been sitting with his head down during Cara’s rant, but raised it to ask the question.

“Is your mind short, too, like your body?” Arn Bolen chided. “No one’s friends with the monsters. They’re trying to take over the world, killing and eating everyone they can find, except those with magic they want to use. Those types last a little longer before they’re eaten.”

Cara shook her head. The conversation was getting them nowhere. “Firesnake, are you sure they went that way? Did your tracking get confused? Maybe you aren’t smelling them right or something.”

“I don’t smell them,” he said. “Which is good because the odor from this lot would overpower any scent I could get from the targets. It’s a special magic I have. Once you showed them to me and I inspected the areas they passed through on this side of the Molars, I locked in their specific energy. I could follow them into the ocean, if they went for a swim.
