Mrs Garnett at Kedleston Hall

Kedleston Hall in Derbyshire was built between 1759 and 1765. The State Rooms by Robert Adam remain largely untouched and are a major attraction of the house. The East Midlands region has trialled an interpretive approach involving a welcome to the house by Mrs Garnett, the housekeeper. It was the duty of the real Mrs Garnett to greet and show around the house the eighteenth-century visitors who came to admire the house of Lord Scarsdale. In costume and in role, the present-day Mrs Garnett offers an introductory talk for visitors, stressing that Kedleston was built as a show house, placing it in its historical context and offering glimpses into the domestic life of the house and the role and conditions of the servants. Tours take place at intervals, and visitors are given the opportunity to join as they wish, or to use more traditional approaches such as the guidebook, or merely to wander and soak up the atmosphere.
