CHAPTER 8

After pissing off Banger’s entire family, I went home before I started crying about it. Since I was already feeling low, I decided to break my news to my family. Kidra met me at the door.

“You might wanna turn around and go back where you came from. It’s a war zone in there.” She stepped aside since I decided to take my chances.

I went through the porch and opened the living room door. My parents were yelling and throwing things at each other. We knew they had fights, but they usually kept them quiet and behind closed doors. I guessed they thought we were old enough to see the gritty parts of their marriage at that point.

Mommy threw Kidra’s cheerleading trophies, my track medals, both of our high school diplomas, and family pictures at his head. Daddy yelped, shielded himself, and threw some things back. He went to her curio cabinet and started launching her knick knacks at the wall. When he started shattering the Precious Moments collection, I knew divorce papers would be on the table by the next business day. Mommy had been collecting those Precious Moments figurines since before Kidra was born. A lot of them were limited edition. He made sure to break those first.

“What the hell is the deal?” I asked when Kidra joined me in the spectators’ section against the wall.

Kidra shrugged. “They found out they were cheating on each other. Some jackass called here for Mommy a little bit after you left, so Daddy went out with some hoochie.”

My head snapped in her direction. “What?”

“Where were you all night? I was blowing up your pager.” Kidra moved around their argument, dodging flying objects. I wasn’t as swift getting through the living room. Daddy used one of the Precious Moments figurines to practice throwing curveballs, and it hit me in the stomach.

“Ah! Daddy, watch the baby!” I shrieked, and kept going.

Slowly, their throwing came to an end while they processed what I said. They turned their attention to me.

“What baby?” Daddy demanded. He stomped to me with fury in his eyes.

“I’m two months pregnant,” I told him in a plain voice. I was tired of hiding like I was in high school.

All the anger Mommy had for Daddy turned to me. “Why the hell would you do something so stupid? I thought you were trying to do something with yourself?”

“I am doing something with myself,” I argued.

“Community college ain’t shit, Monaysia! It’s the thirteenth grade! You might as well have repeated your senior year. It’s bad enough I have to explain to people that you dropped out and wound up back here on your ass. Now I have to tell people why they see you going to the welfare office and WIC. I know you don’t think you can support a baby off of half naked pictures and what you make at the phone company. I’ve seen your paycheck stubs.”

I walked away from that nonsensical talk. After staying in the house I did last night, I knew WIC and food stamps weren’t things I had to worry about.
