Chapter Thirty

Zia

We’re in Grigory’s bed, eating the last of the pelmeni, which is crazy delicious, just like everything else Ogla has made thus far.

“So the whole time you were just quoting lyrics from Snoop Dogg songs?”

Grigory laughs. “Yes, but our father didn’t speak English, so he thought it was a proper lesson.”

Obviously, the first thing we did after retiring from the couch downstairs was fuck like crazy. It was even better the second time around, now that most of the barriers between us have been torn down.

Since then, we’ve been talking for hours about everything from our favorite American novels to what life was like growing up in Russia and even a minor debate on the best pizza in New York.

“So Christmas is in a couple of weeks. You get a few days off from hockey, right? I know Maya is going with Erik to Sweden to visit his father’s side of the family. Are you going back home?”

Grigory shakes his head and swallows the pelmeni in his mouth. “I go home for summer. I usually stay here for Christmas.”

“So, what do you do for the holidays?” I ask, taking a sip of beer to wash down the food.

Grigory shrugs and shakes his head.

“Wait,” I say, sitting up straighter. “You don’t do anything? Not even a tree or decorations or…anything?”

“It is just another day for me,” he confesses.

“Oh no, not while I’m living here. You’re officially celebrating this year. When you get back, this place is going to get decked out. It’s going to make those windows at Bergdorf Goodman look like a kindergarten classroom.”

Grigory gives me a crooked grin as though he doesn’t quite get the analogy, which makes it all the more sad.

“And you’re definitely coming to my parents’ place the day of. That is not up for debate. Trust me, it will be worth it.”

“Are you sure?”

It’s only now that I realize how that invitation could be interpreted.

“Absolutely,” I say with a bright smile. “I want you to meet them.”

“I am curious to meet your grandparents. They sound…interesting.”

“Yeah, that will be the highlight,” I say with a laugh. “It’s like the odd couple doubled.”

Even now, as I imagine my mother’s staunchly Christian and reserved parents dueling in the kitchen and dining room with my dad’s very liberal parents, I laugh to myself.

“Well then, it’s official. Your first real Christmas in the city.”

“I knew there was a reason I invited you to live here.”

“Just wait till you see what I can do with tinsel.”

He laughs and pulls me into his side. I curl against him, enjoying the solid feel of his body.

“This is nice,” he murmurs against my temple.

“Mmm,” I hum in agreement.

My eyes slide to the alarm clock on the nightstand next to him, and I shoot up. “Oh my god, it’s almost five o’clock! Have we been talking that long?”

Grigory glances over at the clock, then shrugs.

“But what about your game tonight?”

“I can sleep on the plane.”

“What time do you have to go?”

He pauses for half a second before answering.
