C assandra knew everything, including the icy fear prickling through Fergus’ veins. Being in such close proximity to him gave her the strength, the knowledge, to close the curtain of her mind and keep him from seeing her thoughts. She only hoped she possessed the strength once they were not touching, when her mind was weakened without the stone.

The coital bliss between them cooled and she climbed from his body. She left her hand resting on his chest, hesitant to remove it and lose the surge in her power. He watched her intently, his brow furrowed in hard concentration.

He wondered what she had seen in his mind, and longed to extract the knowledge from her mind. His racing heartbeat under her palm calmed to a steady thud and still she did not pull away her hand. She knew everything.

He had never seen his son, he didn’t even know his name, yet still his love for the child was fierce. The king was using the boy to encourage Fergus to do his bidding. And Cassandra was part of that bidding. The king needed not only the stone, but also her.

Yet there was more, a part of Fergus going deeper than he even realized. There was good in him. A beautiful beacon of goodness shining in the inky darkness within. He had hope - for a family, for love. And she had become part of that hope, even as he knew he would have to turn her over to the king’s care. Even as he knew it would most likely end in her death.

The earth’s presence crackled around Cassandra. A reminder of the strength she stood upon every day, the strength she had only just learned to draw from. She closed her eyes and pulled the buzz of energy toward her. It hummed through her veins and lit her body and mind with exactly what she needed.

She opened her eyes and removed her hand from Fergus’ chest. His mind tapped against hers, and yet she maintained the control to keep him at bay.

“How do ye know how to do that?” he asked.

“A Protector’s secret.” She glanced over her shoulder at him. While she no longer had his ability to sense emotions wavering off anyone or read their thoughts, she could see the frustration carved on his face.

He rose from the bed, naked and obviously unashamed of his fully nude state. She was not so blissfully uncaring. Her face burned with heat. She had wanted him with a force wild enough to threaten to rip her apart, and what they had shared had been incredible.

All this time, he meant to betray her. And yet since the moment he met her, he did not want to. Every decision was for his son. Could she fault such a noble cause?

“Cassandra.” He reached out to her.

She looked at his hand stretching toward her. “If you mean to read my thoughts by touching me, you will only find I have more strength.”

“What did ye see?” he asked.

“Enough.”
