Chapter Eleven
Collin tightened the quilt around his shoulders as he sat at the table and watched Cassandra prepare scrambled eggs. Something like this had never happened before, and he was amazed that a woman like Cassandra would capture his interest so quickly. All of the well-schooled ladies he had been with would never lower themselves to first have him strip down into his underthings and wrap a heavy quilt around his body as his clothes dried near the fire, and second to prepare his meal with their own hands. She would certainly make some man a fine wife.
Of course, if he ever married, he would expect his servants to prepare the meals, not his wife. However, it was nice to know Cassandra had a talent that most women of nobility did not possess. She was certainly one in a million.
To make their situation even worse, she had changed out of her wet clothes. However, he had been with enough women to know she wore no chemise or corset under her thin gown, and there were no stockings on her legs. When she moved closer to the hearth, the flames from the fire silhouetted her legs perfectly through the garment. His mouth watered, and all he wanted to do was hold her. He especially liked that her damp hair was straight, and hung provocatively around her shoulders. She was certainly a country girl, but he didnât mind that one bit.
If his father ever knew Collin was spending time with girl from a penniless family, the old man would have heart palpitations. That wasnât the reason Collin wanted to be with Cassandra, but it was humorous to think that his father wouldnât approve. But Collin didnât need the old manâs endorsement anyway.
âCollin, you must say something.â Cassandra glanced at him over her shoulder. âThe silence is unsettling.â
âForgive me.â He stood from the kitchen chair, keeping the quilt around him as he moved next to her. âI suppose you can show me how to make my own eggs.â
She gasped and swung toward him with wide eyes. âAbsolutely not. Men like yourself should never learn to make their own food.â
âThen we shall make this our little secret.â He winked. âBesides, it will give us something to talk about, correct?â
She laughed. âYou are incorrigible.â
âI would hope so.â He bumped his arm against hers. âBut I really do enjoy having a secret just between us.â
She turned back toward the skillet and stirred the cooking eggs. âAre you aware this isnât our only secret?â
âItâs not?â he asked jokingly.
âPlease, tell me you havenât forgotten aboutâ¦the kiss.â
Her voice softened, which made his heart beat faster. He ran his gaze over her long hair, loving how enticing it looked. Of course, she was more alluring due to the intense moment between them.
âI havenât stopped thinking about our kiss,â he whispered huskily, taking a lock of her almost-dry blonde hair and rubbing it between his finger and thumb. âAnd I havenât stopped wanting it to happen again.â
Her throat jumped in what must have been a hard swallow.
