HEATHER HAD NEVER FELT MORE uncomfortable in her life. With her wrists bound behind her and her mouth gagged, she was sat in front of Gordon on his horse, completely helpless.
She was more annoyed than scared, owing to the fact that Malcolm would no more reward these ruffians than give up his claim to the throne. Aye, of course, they were related to the king but why on earth Connell and Gordon would think he would want them under Scottish protection, she knew not. After all, Scotland and England were at peace. Everyone knew that.
But, being complete imbeciles, mayhap these two ignorant souls were still dwelling on the past. Good Lord. She just wanted to get down. Her bottom was aching from the ride and she seriously needed to stretch her legs.
Moments later, her wish was granted. Connell brought his horse to a standstill, with Gordon following suit.
They were at the base of a large, imposing looking rocky outcrop. There was an opening to one side, partially covered by vines.
"'Twill be dark soon. We will take shelter here for the night and continue onwards on the morrow," Connell remarked.
Both men dismounted and lifted the women off their horses. Connell moved Rhona towards Heather. "See to it that they don't run, Gordon."
Gordon placed both his hands on the girls and Connell took care of the horses, leading them over to a low tree and tying the reins securely.
"Keep your wits about you, if you are going in that cave," Gordon cautioned. "Could be anything in there."
"Aye, Gordon, I know what to do." Heather watched him withdraw a small blade before he ventured near the opening. Moving aside the vines, he stepped inside and disappeared from view.
A few moments later, he reappeared and strode over to them. "'Tis only small, hardly goes back much further than a few feet. It will give us good shelter for the night, though. Take the girls inside and hide them from view. I will gather some kindling."
"Aye, will do." Gordon ushered Heather and Rhona towards the cave and they stepped inside the opening. The interior was dank, and the faint sound of water droplets hitting stone from a height could be heard towards the back. Heather shivered uneasily.
Gordon's footsteps echoed throughout as he inspected their temporary dwelling. "You two come and sit over here." He pointed to a large flat rock to one side, barely visibly in the dim light emanating from the entrance. When they didn't respond immediately, he shouted, his voice bouncing off the walls, "Do as you are bid!"
Reluctantly, the girls approached him and sat where he had told them to, side by side. Satisfied that he had their obedience, he walked to the entrance and peered out.
Heather leaned her shoulder against Rhona in a show of affection, groaning softly through her gag to let her know she was weary. In response, Rhona nodded slowly and groaned back. It was all they could do.
They watched silently whilst Gordon and Connell started a small fire in the middle of the cave.
