7.1 Introduction
Technological advances have changed the overall scenario of crop improvement in the present era. Various omics approaches like genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and ionomics play important roles in crop improvement. Proteomics is a complex field which deals with the study of structure and function of proteins. Proteomics as an advanced omics tools could be used to understand the mechanism of plant response to different stresses. This branch of omics could also be used to have insight of the pathways of different defense mechanism and metabolite synthesis in plants. At the time of unfavorable conditions like biotic stresses (insect, fungal, bacterial, and viral), plants undergo certain changes in their metabolite synthesis pathways that provide defense to the plant to cope with the stress. These stresses lead to alteration in the plants' efficiency. When encountering biotic stress, plants undergo two different pathways for recognizing and resisting pathogen attack. The first pathway deals with DAMPs (dangerâassociated molecular patterns) and PAMPs (pathogenâassociated molecular patterns) formation and in the second pathway ETI (effectorâtriggered immunity) and PTI (PAMPsâtriggered immunity) are formed after the recognition of pathogen by specific pathogen effector molecules (De Wit 2007; Dodds and Rathjen 2010; Lodha and Basak 2012). In this chapter, we discuss different proteomics technologies which could be used as alternatives to characterize the alteration in pathways associated with defense and metabolite synthesis.
