“Nicely written. Well, except for having the wrong two guys in love with each other, as usual. But aside from that…don’t you think the whole idea of shapeshifters is a little far-fetched? I mean, ghosts, vampires, werewolves, zombies—they’re all occult. But you have people who can just turn into animals any time, without a curse or a spell, and everyone just goes along with it? Who would ever believe that could be real?”

Madden just stared at the comment, wishing it didn’t hurt so bad. After all, the reader had complimented his writing. Right before he missed the most important point.

“You’re right,” Madden typed back. “No one really thinks shifters are real. But hey, it’s fiction. Anything goes.”

Except Madden knew better.

Because Madden himself was a squirrel shifter. And the kind of disbelief he saw in Comix90’s comment just reinforced Madden’s fear that he would never be able to confide his secret to anyone and have them accept the truth.

With his mood tanked, Madden logged out and shut down his laptop. He made himself a cup of hot chocolate, which perked him up a little, but not really. From his window, he had a nice view of Schenley Park, with its green lawns, trails, and big trees.

Usually, that calmed him, because he loved to run in his fur there. But so far, he had yet to meet another shifter of any sort. That just made Madden’s dark mood worse.

Tomorrow, he promised himself. Tomorrow I will at least go for a ramble in the park. I need to get out, even if I don’t meet any shifters or new people. Maybe the real squirrels will at least be friendly.
