In 1958, the Food Additives Amendment was passed. This, along with the Color Additive Amendment of 1960, is the most recent change to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act adopted in 1938 to protect our nation’s food supply. These amendments turned the tables on food manufacturers, who were adding just about anything to food. The amendments required that an additive be proven safe before it entered the food supply. In addition, both amendments contained the Delaney Clause banning any additive found to induce cancer in man or animal (see page 89 for further discussion of the Delaney Clause).
