While Hilo’s coast is lined with reefs rather than sand, the gentle waters are ideal for stand up paddle (SUP) surfing, the latest craze. Rent a board and paddle, and launch from Mokuola (Coconut Island), Reed’s Bay (Offline map) or Wailoa River State Park. For surfing, head to Honoli‘i Beach Park.

While diving is best on the Kona side, there are decent shore-dive spots in Hilo, including Wai‘uli and Wai‘olena Beach Parks, with depths of 10ft to 70ft, lava arches, coral reefs, and sightings of turtles and whales in season.

The following outfits are solid and conveniently located downtown.

Sun & Sea Hawaii WATERSPORTS

Nautilus Dive Center DIVING

Offline map ( 935-6939; www.nautilusdivehilo.com; 382 Kamehameha Ave; scuba package per day $35; 9am-5pm Tue-Sat) Hilo’s go-to dive shop offers guided dives, PADI certification courses and general advice on shore diving. If you’re a certified diver, rent here and head to the best East Hawai‘i dive site at Pohoiki Bay in Puna.

Orchidland Surfboards SURFING

Offline map ( 935-1533; www.orchidlandsurf.com; 262 Kamehameha Ave; 9am-5pm Mon-Sat, 10am-3pm Sun) For board rentals and surf gear; Owner Stan Lawrence is an expert surfer, and he opened the Big Island’s first surf shop in 1972.

Hilo Municipal Golf Course GOLF

Offline map ( 959-7711; 340 Haihai St; greens fee Mon-Fri $29, Sat & Sun $34) Hilo’s main course (the Muni) is nicely maintained and a terrific deal. Morning tee times are favored by the local contingent.

Naniloa Country Club Golf Course GOLF

Offline map ( 120 Banyan Dr; 935-3000; greens fee $10) Most locals golf at the Muni, so this nine-hole course is uncrowded and boasts a pretty setting across from Lili‘uokalani Park.

Yoga Centered YOGA

Offline map ( 934-7233; www.yogacentered.com; 37 Waianuenue Ave; drop-in class $15; boutique 10am-5pm Mon-Thu, to 4pm Sun) Find youthful instructors, a variety of styles (mostly flow) and an attractive downtown space. Boutique items are stylish, if pricey.

Balancing Monkey Yoga Center YOGA

Offline map ( 936-9590; www.balancingmonkey.com; 65 Mohouli St; drop-in class $14; Sun-Fri) Home studio with an indie vibe offers vinyasa flow classes.

Ho‘olulu Complex SWIMMING

Offline map ( 260 Kalanikoa St; 961-8698) For lap swimming, this Olympic-sized, open-air pool is generally uncrowded during the day. Call for hours.
