CHAPTER NINETEEN

ON MONDAY, WE DO THE paperwork before class. On Tuesday, I work on my tiles with intense focus because they’re due at the end of the week, and I’m behind. On Wednesday, I text with them but don’t see them. On Thursday, I’m glazing again, and I think my tiles are coming out pretty good.

But on Friday night, I’m bored. Maybe it’s the edges of my fraying mind, I don’t know. But Janey is away on a trip to California, Giada is babysitting for Raina, and Raina is on a date with her hubby. Colby is working, so Chance is out with his nerds. So I lay in bed, laptop open, studying...refreshing my grades probably more than necessary. But I know Glenn, and they grade on Fridays. They are disgustingly self-disciplined that way.

So when my second project grade pops up, I get a little notification. I skim down until I find it, bending over the screen laid flat on my lap, scrolling with my finger. B-. I sit back. Okay, B- is okay. I don’t have to impress anyone with my grades; I just have to pass the damn class.

My phone dings and vibrates, and I lunge for it because I’m tired of entertaining myself.

Teacher person: Did you see it?

Hillary: How did you know I was waiting for it?

Teacher person: The intranet tells me who’s online for the chat...

Hillary: And yet you’re texting me behind its back instead. Very interesting.

Teacher person: Maybe I didn’t feel like being school-appropriate.

Hillary: Mx. Rasmussen, what are you suggesting?

Teacher person: I think you know.

Hillary: Excuse me, but I think you have me confused with someone else. I am a very innocent college student with no notion of impropriety.
