CHAPTER NINE

The sound finally pierced through the heavy fog of sleep enshrouding Tiffany’s brain. When it did, she stared, for the most part unseeingly, at the digital clock on the nightstand.

The numbers eventually registered.

That has to be wrong. The message telegraphed itself to her barely awake brain.

But even as the time slowly soaked in, the ringing sound continued, alternating with someone knocking on her door.

After groggily making her way to an upright position, Tiffany somehow wound up falling out of bed as she reached for a robe to throw over the football jersey she slept in.

That woke her up. Uttering a few choice words, she got up off the floor and tugged on the robe, which was in reality shorter than the extra-large jersey. She stretched out one foot, in search of her slippers. Coming up with nothing, she gave up and went out of her bedroom barefoot.

She really wished the doorbell would stop ringing, she thought angrily as she slid one hand along the banister and made her way down the stairs to the front door.

By the time she reached it she was not only fully awake, she was fully angry, as well.

All set to bite the guilty party’s head off, she swung open the door.

Standing on her front step, Eddie looked at her disapprovingly. “You didn’t ask who it was.”

“I was hoping it was a burglar who’d put me out of my misery because someone keeps insisting on destroying my weekends,” she growled. She stepped back, letting him in, although she wasn’t entirely sure why she was doing that. She would much rather have just slammed the door in his face. “I didn’t think you’d come back,” she told him. Her robe fell open as she dragged a hand through her hair in a futile effort to get it to settle down.

His eyes swept over her for a split second, then politely looked away. He’d never seen a football jersey looking quite that sexy before. He wondered if it belonged to an ex-boyfriend.

“I didn’t finish the job,” he pointed out. “Why wouldn’t I be back?”

Did he want her to spell it out for him? “Because now that you’re the darling of Bedford Elementary and have practically everyone eating out of your hand, there’s no need to continue at your ‘side’ job.”

He paused at the foot of the stairs to look at her, deliberately focusing on her eyes. “You are so far from ‘getting me’ that it’s mind-blowing,” he told her.

With that, Eddie turned back toward the stairs, hefting his significantly large toolbox as he went up the steps to the master bathroom.

Tiffany was not about to let his sentence just hang like that in the air. She was right behind him. “Well, then enlighten me.”

Eddie kept walking. “I start a job, I finish a job no matter what. It’s as simple as that.”

Reaching the landing, she sighed loudly, as if with every fiber of her being. “There is nothing simple about you.”

Something in her voice definitely piqued his interest.
