THE THIRD CATEGORY

The third category of people include the ones who are good to meet and good to be with as well. It is indeed a very big achievement to maintain a peaceful and happy relationship for a long time. It is a matter of gratification to maintain such an ambience throughout the lifetime. It is the biggest achievement of life to maintain a peaceful co-existence. A family with ten members and all of them equally affectionate and caring towards each other.

There are a few tests to judge such people.

TEST 1: These kinds of people are devoid of pride (arrogance). A proud person cannot live with others peacefully. He will always have problems with one or the other. Only a humble and calm person can lead a peaceful and happy life. Humility is a difficult acquaintance. A person having even a little knowledge, intelligence, strength or wealth becomes proud about his accomplishments or possessions. It is very difficult to balance these emotions.

Power and prosperity may make a person proud. There are many fields of education and achievement today, like M.B.A., C.A., C.S., M.S., I.A.S., etc. I consider these as the touchstones of life. They are not the ultimate goal of our life, yet people become proud on achieving these degrees and posts. However, added to this, on receiving a higher post a person often looks down on others. Only a humble, polite and serene person can lead a long, peaceful life. Humility is the first defining characteristic of a happy and peaceful co-existence.

TEST 2: Such a person would be very soft-spoken. The people who are not prudent enough in talking to others and use bitter words can never live peacefully. According to me, a person who is prudent in his speech and takes care of what to speak and never speaks anything that can make others feel inferior is a great Mauni.10 I believe that a person who is soft-spoken and who keeps everyone happy with his words is a great Mauni.

I have come across many people who practised the penance of Maun (remaining silent) for months together. But, when they broke their silence they spoke so much in a month that they wasted all the energy saved in the months of penance. People have practised silence for five to ten years in the caves of the Himalayas. But, when they came down among people their speech was so harsh and heated that it felt as if it was melting the ice of peace. Hence, it is said that only the person who can maintain the prudence of speech and make others happy is a great mauni and he can lead a peaceful happy life.

TEST 3: Tolerance is the third test of a pleasant person. A tolerant person can live in peace forever. There’s an ancient story that illustrates this.

Once there was a Chinese emperor. He had a prime minister who was now retired. People used to live in joint families in olden times. The old prime minister also lived with his huge family.
