Harmonica Embellishments

Embellishments are playing techniques that add nuance and flavor to a musician’s playing. There are a number of harmonica playing embellishments that slide to or from a particular note. They may have a definitive starting note and/or end note or not. The slide may be from high note to low note or vice versa or may alternate between two notes. The following are a number of harmonica embellishments and their various properties.

Fall Off – This has a definite starting note and then performs a quick slide downward without a definite ending pitch. This is accomplished by moving the harmonica to the right or your mouth to the left quickly after sounding, blow or draw, the starting pitch.

Gliss Up – This is a quick slide up from an indefinite pitch to a particular pitch. The gliss is usually started two or three holes to the left of the final pitch and quickly slides up to the final pitch.

Gliss Down – This is a fast slide down from an indefinite pitch to a particular note. The gliss down is usually started two or three holes to the right of the final pitch and quickly slides down to the final pitch.

Slide Up and Down – This is a slide between two definite pitches and maybe executed quickly or more slowly. The Slide Up occurs when moving from a lower note to a higher note with at least one hole in between the two notes. The Slide Down is the opposite in direction as the Slide Up.

Shake – This is a rapid alteration between two adjacent holes on the harmonica. The two most common places for a Shake are between the draw 3 and draw 4 and between draw 4 and draw 5. The Shake can be accomplished by either moving the harmonica or the head. Care needs to be taken to be sounding only the two particular notes of the Shake. Single tones should be easily identifiable. You don’t want to be sounding more than a single note at a time or it will just turn into a mash up of sound. You also want each of the notes in the shake to be equal in volume and time duration. A Shake can also be bent to create interesting effects.
