Children at Hill House, Mississippi, July 4, 2936 (above), and boys wrestling by the side of the road, Person County, North Carolina, July 1939 (right). Farm Security Administration photographer Dorothea Lange seems to have captured both children’s play and, more unusually, children’s fighting across race lines. Yet both images are ambiguous. The children at Hill House are obviously posed, telling us comparatively little about the context in which the photograph was taken. The North Carolina boys may have been acting spontaneously, but were they actually fighting or only playing, and does the black child have a smile on his face or a grimace?
