Maintaining pH

The pH, or the relative acidity or alkalinity of your growing medium, should remain as close to neutral as possible, which is seven on a scale of zero to fourteen, where zero is the most acidic. You can measure it easily with test strips (which are not precisely accurate) or with a waterproof pH pen, which is more expensive but easier to use. Gardening shops carry products to adjust the pH of the medium your plants are growing in, but be sure to follow the instructions carefully, or you’ll be stuck in the loop of increasing acidity one day and alkalinity the next. An acidic growing medium locks up nutrients in acid salts, resulting in curling leaves, reduced flowering, and a greatly diminished yield. Too much alkalinity causes chlorosis, the yellowing of the leaves, which interferes with photosynthesis, thus reducing plant vigor and growth.
