“Raise money?” My stomach did a flip. I had never asked for a penny in my life. Even back in Wexford as a child, I had worked summers, bought my own clothes and paid my own school fees. She caught my reaction and reassured me that it was no big deal, just get a letter together stating what you need, and send it to everyone you know. Simple as that! Monica was a dynamo with a will of pure steel. She opened her calendar, marked a date for a spring production and then set about moving mountains to achieve that goal. And just as she had promised, friends came out of the woodworks with their twenties and fifties. It was an education on the fly, for we never knew where the next dollar was coming from, except that come it did. We found El Bohio, a community space in an abandoned school off Tompkins Square, run by a group of aging, but still committed, Young Lords – wonderful people with open hearts of gold. We converted their theatre into the back streets of politically charged Liverpool. Next, we auditioned, cast and rehearsed a bunch of experienced and beginning actors. And, oh by the way, we fought like dogs about the meaning, content and thrust of the play.
