After the three-masted, wooden-hulled SS Central America sank off the South Carolina coast in 1857, the loss of its gold cargo helped de-stabilize the national economy.

Soon, he turned his attentions to the Rensselaer & Saratoga line, one of the earliest to be chartered.

Since October 1835, a service had been running between Troy and Ballston, a distance of some 25 miles (40 km). Like many conceived in haste, the line had its shortcomings and had to agree terms with the Schenectady & Saratoga Railroad so its passengers could travel onwards.

When Gould became involved with the railroad he seized on the possibilities of leasing nearby lines to make better sense of routes.
