There are several steps to this process, no matter what email system you use, and there’s one Gmail-specific tip.

ƒ Pick a strong password - see “Selecting a Password” in chapter 2. This is your first line of defense in almost any computer system. ƒ Make sure your computer is running the latest operating system patches, and the latest browser versions. Security problems are fixed by developers all the time, and keeping up to date here will keep most of the malware out.

ƒ Turn on HTTPS - for personal Gmail, this is an option until the General tab of Settings. For Google Apps, it must be set by the administrator under ‘Domain Settings’. HTTPS is slower than non-secure traffic (due to the overhead of making it secure) but is not noticeable in most situation. Turning this on stops others from listening to your email on open wi-fi connections at coffee shops, for example.
