The Lakers didn’t always cruise—they beat the Rockets on the road 125–120, mostly because the Houston guards—Calvin Murphy, John Vallely, former Laker Johnny Egan, and future Laker broadcaster Stu Lantz—couldn’t do anything with Goodrich, who had forty-two points. West shot twenty-two free throws but missed seven of them. But that’s how it goes when it’s going good. You win anyway. Chamberlain took only one shot. One. He made it. He had three points.

Shackelford, Hearn’s sidekick, remembers pulling out a little pocket schedule around this time and showing it to Riley and Goodrich. They started perusing it. We’ve already crushed them twice, I don’t see us getting beat here, we should win this one. “I remember somebody saying, ‘I don’t see us being challenged until that game in Milwaukee on January ninth,’ ” says Shackelford.

Sharman didn’t want to hear it. He came from that baseball tradition where it was verboten to talk to a pitcher about a no-hitter.
