Different as they are, all three of these perspectives result in a distinction being drawn between the spiritual and the material. Part of the answer to the question of how Americans can be spiritual and materialistic at the same time is thus that we accomplish this feat by engaging in cultural work. We in fact draw a distinction between spirituality and the material realm, placing the two in separate cognitive categories. Virtually everyone with whom we spoke did this. The differences in how people accomplish this task, however, are also of some significance. The nature of the distinction influences how the spiritual and the material can be connected. Having drawn the distinction, we do not simply keep the two categories totally separate. Instead, we let them come together. Our understanding of the one inevitably influences our understanding of the other. How people pray, and the kinds of answers they receive, are in particular a way in which the importance of these differences become evident.
