Clearly, human beings are not merely mechanistic entities but complex, moral, and social creatures. Modern management theories advocate that work environments should be organized to provide for all these qualities of the individual. The subject of motivation, therefore, takes on a crucial role.

Historically, the primary levers of motivation were rooted in fear—namely, the fear of job loss or punitive action. Thankfully, this form of motivation has become largely obsolete in most developed societies. Yet, the absence of fear does not automatically engender positive motivation. It has to be intentionally cultivated, and in the context of RDHY, this positive motivation is inherently linked to the creation of value for users.

RDHY’s most fascinating feature, in my opinion, is its capacity to harmonize the motivations of various stakeholders, the firm, its employees, and its customers. This alignment is achieved by transforming employees into shareholders, thereby giving them a stake in the value they contribute to creating. The elegance of this model lies in its self-reinforcing nature: the greater the value created for users, the higher the returns for both the firm and its employees.

Drucker anticipated the alignment of employees’ value realization and users’ value creation by realizing that:

What the enterprise must demand of the worker is that he willingly direct his efforts toward the goals of the enterprise.11
