Chapter Nineteen

When Jackson and I got back to the house, we went down into the game room. It was on what was officially considered the first floor.

At the beach, it wasn’t unusual for the main living area to be on the second floor. All the homes were built up on stilts in case floodwaters came in, and usually the bottom level was reserved for more unimportant rooms of the house.

I didn’t spend much time down here in my game room. When I’d purchased the house, it had come with a pool table, air hockey, and an old-school arcade game. I’d put some whiskey-colored brown leather couches around the room and decorated it with some fun artwork I’d found featuring dogs in sweaters.

But none of that was really important right now.

I sat on the couch with my legs crossed and my laptop in my lap. I was trying to work on some wedding stuff, even though I was really just staring at my screen and thinking about what we’d just learned.

Jackson sat on the couch beside me, following up with potential witnesses, checking security footage, and looking into more people who’d sent those threatening messages.

Meanwhile, the TV played at low volume, offering some background noise.

Thirty minutes into his work, Jackson sucked in a breath and straightened. “I think I have someone.”

I closed my laptop, all my attention on him.

Those were the words I’d been waiting to hear.

“Who?” I asked.

“You know that guy you pointed out? The one who goes by the moniker Pooches and Mooches?”

“Yes, I remember.” With a weird name like that, who could forget?

“His real name is Ralph Emerson, and he only lives about two hours away from the Outer Banks. I checked his credit card records, and they show he purchased something from a store in Kill Devil Hills two days ago.”

My heart leapt into my throat. KDH was the next town over and part of the OBX community.

“Maybe he’s our guy. Does he limp?” I frowned at the sound of my words. “Is it politically incorrect to ask that?”

Jackson shook his head, ignoring my inquiry. “Unfortunately, a limp isn’t something that’s listed on his social media profiles. But Ralph is definitely someone we’re going to need to track down.”

Hope surged through me. “Any idea where he might be staying in the area?”

“That’s what I’m working on now. But this is the best lead that we’ve gotten so far. Plus, Ralph leads a dog rescue group. I’m sure he has volunteers—some of those very volunteers might be dedicated enough to gang up on Lennon and teach her a lesson.”

It sounded like a good fit to me. “I’m glad someone has finally risen to the surface. I really just want to put all this behind me.”

“Me too.”

Before we could talk about it anymore, a news story came on the TV.

Jackson and I turned our attention to the reporter on the screen.

Dianna Peters.

I braced myself for whatever she was about to say.
