Our own aircraft had several holes in it but no-one hurt; however a large part of the port aileron was missing. Control could only be kept by flying fast and doing shallow left hand turns.

Luckily we had height enough to pick a couple of fields with a hedge between for a crash landing, and went in – fast. The flaps worked and improved stability. Speed was lost by rubbing the skid hard into the first field and bursting through the hedge.

We came to rest just short of a second hedge where the whole complement unloaded without much difficulty. Relieved to have made landfall just on the Allied side of the canal line, we found our way to the nearby Headquarters of a Unit of 7th Armoured Brigade which was about to advance.
