CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

High Stick

HITTING ANOTHER PLAYER with the stick in the head or shoulders, hitting the puck with the stick above the shoulders

Saratoga Springs vicinity, Isaac’s Mother’s house, afternoon

Their three large black SUVs pulled up on the street next to the mansion. The house was on the outskirts of the city, and fronted a large horse farm spreading out for acres behind it. The house itself was Tudor-style and rambled a little. It reminded Glen strongly of something from a 1940’s Hollywood movie, right down to the precision trim on the hedges.

There was a waist-high stone fence around the place, on top of which were decorative but very utilitarian iron bars, with pointy bits on top. Across from their cars was a solid black metal gate taller than even James or Glen. In front of it was a crowd of reporters.

“Well, that didn’t take very long.” Tyler eyed the crowd with annoyance.

“So how are we going to play this? Sam Spade? Miss Marple?” Glen raised an eyebrow at Tyler, humor lurking on his face.

“I — seriously? This woman just lost her son and you want to figure out what fictional detective to emulate? Anyway, we totally couldn’t get away with a Miss Marple — Colombo, maybe.”

Glen slipped an arm around Tyler’s shoulders. “Despite the circumstances, you have to remember that we’re in a murder mystery and I really don’t want to be in a gritty gumshoe dime novel. I’d rather be in one of those cozy ones with tea, cookies, and murder-minded cats. It’s a lot less hassle and the food is a hell of a lot better.”

Tyler pondered this point. “Hmmm, I see your point.” Tyler chewed his lip a moment. “Let’s go with a general Miss Marple neighborly vibe and then slip in a Colombo there at the end.”

“Ok but that part is for you, since you’re the one who spent years practicing your dumb guy act in front of vicious scheming sociopaths.”

“Ah, family.” Tyler pressed a button on the side of his door. “James, let’s form a phalanx for the entrance. We’re not stopping. Tim, please call Mrs. Szynolski and let her know we’re here. Otherwise, we’ll be stuck at the gate not answering questions.”

Glen sighed. “I hope this is worth it.”

Tyler gave him a vaguely menacing smile. “It will be, one way or the other. At the very least, we’ll be on record as looking into this.”

The security guys got out of various cars and took up positions. Six of them stood on the street-side of their vehicle and after a moment for looking around, James rapped twice on the window. Glen and Tyler got out. Immediately, the security guys formed up around them. They moved forward slowly towards the gate.

The reporters were mobbing the cars, obviously sensing someone important. The crowd of them lit up as soon as one of them recognized Glen and Tyler. Shouted questions began to pepper them.

“Mr. Conrad, are you coming to offer the victim’s mother your condolences?”

“Tyler, who do you think
