Chapter 15
Nikki sprinted toward the crowd at the end of the road. The dark-haired woman from the church followed behind, but slower, and she kept tugging at her hair so it obscured half of her face.
âIsabel,â Nikki said, slowing, but not for long. âHurry.â The text message sheâd gotten from Ty said he thought the fire was near Joey Stoneâs place, but he wasnât certain. Now that she could see it, she nearly fell. âNo.â If Gideon lost his dad nowâ¦
Sheâd stopped at the diner when she saw Gideonâs truck there, but Katrina had said he left to see where the fire was. She couldnât see him anywhere here, and the fire was visible through the apartment window.
Isabel had caught up and was clinging to her arm. Nikki dragged her forward as she approached the flames. âHe canât be in there. Please tell me heâs not in there.â
A broad-shouldered man in his sixties caught hold of both women and pulled them back. âCareful,â he said. âWe donât need any more injuries today.â
The mayor was an imposing man up close. Nikki put an arm around Isabel as she moved away from him. âI wasnât going into the fire.â
âYou never know. People donât always think straight when theyâre in distress. Isnât that right, Isabel?â
Isabel tightened her grip on Nikkiâs arm.
âShouldnât you be doing something to put this fire out?â Nikki said, shifting to put herself between the mayor and her friend.
âThe firetruck is on its way. Thereâs nothing else to do but make sure everyone stays safe,â he said.
âWas anyoneââ She swallowed back her fear. She wouldnât let him see her afraid.
âInside?â he finished for her. âAlmost.â
âWhatâd you mean?â
âThat new guy in town⦠Whatâs his name?â
âGideon?â
âYeah, thatâs him.â
âHeâs not new. He grew up here.â
âHeâs new to me. He went inside.â
âWhy?â
âTo save Mr. Stone. Probably not worth the risk, but what can you do? Some people are reckless.â
âAre they okay? Theyâre not inside?â
âNot sure how theyâre doing. Didnât look good when they left. Theyâve been taken to the hospital in Oakbridge.â His attention shifted over her shoulder.
âThanks for the information,â Nikki said and pushed Isabel in the opposite direction from Fairfax.
âThatâs it?â Fairfax said. âIsabel, youâre not going to say hello?â
Nikki tried to keep moving, but Isabel stopped. âI heard about the fire,â she mumbled, pulling at the hair in her face.
âThatâs why youâre here? Thatâs why you came into town? Because of the fire?â
âYes.â
âYou shouldnât have come. I thought you were at the farm. Itâs dangerous here. It must be distressing.â
Nikki glared at him. âSheâs fine.â But he wasnât looking at her.
He reached a hand out toward Isabel. âWhy donât I get you out of here?â
âI told you, sheâs fine.â
Fairfax smiled at Isabel. âCome on. Let me take you home.â
Isabel let go of Nikki.
âYou donât have to go with him,â Nikki said.
âItâs okay. I shouldnât have left the farm.â She took the mayorâs hand, and he pulled her close, wrapping her arm around his and locking it there. Nikki wanted to rescue her, but her friend had made her choice.
