CHAPTER 7

Monday, November 1, 1880

“Ruby, I think you should check with Dr. Miller today and see if he has time to see you. I want him to check you and make sure everything is going all right with the baby.” Gideon pulled on his boots and then stood, opened his pants and tucked in his shirt.

Ruby got out of bed and caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror on the bureau. “I think that’s a good idea.” She looked down at her stomach. It was huge compared to yesterday. There was no hiding the fact she was pregnant now. “Gideon. Look at me.”

He pulled his suspenders over his shoulders and clipped them at his waist. “What?”

She waved her hand toward her belly. “Just look at me.”

He looked up and back down and then snapped his head up again. “What the hell?”

Whereas yesterday her stomach had been swollen and the fact she was pregnant was evident when she was naked, her loose clothes pretty much hid the fact from view. Now, something had happened and there was no hiding the pregnancy at all. Her stomach was enormous, comparatively speaking. It was like she’d “popped” over night.

“We’re going to see the doctor now. Get dressed.”

She put on a lovely pink dress she’d gotten from Mama Fraser, then braided her hair letting the tail fall to midway down her back.

“How do you feel?” Gideon pressed his hand to her forehead.

“Fine. I just look different.” What if something is wrong? Is this something that happened to all women? “How about breakfast?”

“Are you sure you feel all right?”

“Yes, I’m fine. I’m hungry though, so why don’t you do your chores and I’ll fix breakfast. Then we’ll go see the doctor together. Oh—” Wincing, she put her hand on her stomach.

Gideon’s eyebrows shot high. “What? What’s wrong?”

“Nothing. The baby just gave me a particularly hard kick.”

“You can feel him move?”

She nodded. “He’s been moving for about a month, but nothing like this.”

He came over to her. “Can I feel it? Jamie said he could feel the babies move when Lucy was pregnant.”

“I don’t know. Come here. Give me your hand.” She pressed on her belly and was rewarded with a kick. She held Gideon’s hand to her and pressed on the baby with her other hand. The baby kicked and Gideon’s eyes grew wide.

“It is truly a miracle.”

She smiled. “Yes, it is.”

After breakfast Gideon walked Ruby from the rectory at one end of town to the doctor’s office in the middle of town. He knocked on the door and went in.

“Dr. Miller? Josiah?”

The doctor emerged from an adjoining room. “Ah, Gideon and the lovely Mrs. Fraser how are you? I wondered when I’d be seeing you.”

Gideon greeted the man. “Morning.”

He was not much taller than Ruby’s own five-and-a-half foot height with gray hair, spectacles and a salt-and-pepper mustache. He looked like a kind man. She liked that.

“Hello, Josiah. We need you to check out Ruby. The baby has…her stomach it’s much larger than it was just yesterday.
