This worldview, rooted in spiritual or religious beliefs, has manifested itself in the continuity and survival of the Ojibwe people—the passing on of history, religious practice, and ways of being are there in all ways of communication and expression, in storytelling, ceremony, work, leisure, and in the making of art.

So, what is Native art? I wondered. The beadwork wall-hanging of pansies made by my uncle Tommy as a special gift for his wife—that would be art, of course. How about the willow baskets made by my grandmother Vickie and sold by her children on Superior Street in the West End neighborhood of Duluth, including in the bars? My grandmother and Aunt Patsy filled them with paper artificial flowers. Were those art? Yes, I thought. The painted stone tomahawks and war clubs? Yes. And what about the toy drums made from tuna cans, covered with birchbark and red rubber cut from ruined inner tubes, can they be considered art as well? I asked my cousin Bob, who is a little older and considerably wiser than me, if there is a way to tell if an object can be actually and legitimately called American Indian art. He answered my question with a question, as is his style. “Did an Indian make it?”
